According to our sources, Memphis has negotiated a buyout with football coach Tommy West. West is to step down at the end of the season.Â
The school reportedly wants to make a splash with the coaching hire as they attempt to transition into the Big East. Our sources say these are the names on the short list:
- Mike Dubose: former Alabama coach currently at Milsaps College
- Jeff Bower: former Southern Miss coach
- Rick Stockstill: currently at MTSU
- Gus Malzhan: Auburn Offensive coordinator
- Phillip Fulmer:Â former Tennessee coach, but school expects to compete with Virginia for his services
- Hugh Freeze: Lambuth coach
- Larry Porter: LSU assistant
- Terry Bowden: Northern Alabama coach
- Tommy Tuberville: former Auburn coach, school expects other interest as well
Some of these names may seem lofty, but the school really wants to make a splash. Fed Ex is expected to throw their corporate weight around in the process as well.

Using a Memphis Tigers UNOFFICIAL message board as a "source" is shaky at best.
