Brian Kelly Should Start Packing for South Bend

Brian Kelly

It is now a guarantee that Notre Dame will fire Charlie Weis after the season. Navy beat the Fighting Irish 23-21 and this is the second straight season that the Midshipmen have upset the Fighting Irish. Weis is one of the most overpaid coaches in all of sports and this has to be his last chance in South Bend. Even with quarterback Jimmy Clausen throwing for 452 yards, the Fighting Irish still found a way to blow this game.

Where should Notre Dame look for a new coach? Fans will want Florida coach Urban Meyer, but he will only leave the Gators for the NFL. Some fans will want the Fighting Irish to take a shot at a wildcard like Jon Gruden. The answer for the Fighting Irish is currently coaching an undefeated BCS team. Cincinnati’s Brian Kelly is one of the best offensive coaches in college football and you have to be impressed with how well he has done with star quarterback Tony Pike injured. Backup quarterback Zack Collaros threw for 480 yards and one touchdown in the 47-45 win over Connecticut. Kelly can turn any quarterback into a potential star and imagine the numbers that Clausen would put up if he returns for his senior season. Under Kelly, Collaros has eight touchdowns and only one interception in his last four games.

Kelly might not bring a top-five recruiting class every season, but he will win with the talent that he has. Look at the season that wide receiver Mardy Gilyard is having under Kelly (908 yards, eight touchdowns) and you will see that Kelly always finds a way to get his star receiver open. Weis has struggled because he has too big of an ego and was handed this opportunity because he was lucky enough to coach under Bill Belichick. Have you noticed that the New England Patriots’ offense always does well under Belichick? Instead of relying on his past success, Kelly will always have good quarterback play and will find a way to make Touchdown Jesus smile again.

  • Guys,

Kelly is coaching in the Big East Conference... Come-on..

  • Hopefully, Kelly is aware that Notre Dame does not red shirt. Kelly loves to red shirt players, build them up and unleash them on the league. At Notre Dame, they will continue to play 18 year olds against the likes of 22-23 year old lineman at USC. There is simply no comparison. Academic standards too high at Notre Dame even for Kelly. The odds for success at Notre Dame have changed. I see Kelly failing too under these conditions. He likes Cincinnati, will get upwards of 2 million next year, facility upgrades will start in December 2009 and stadium upgrades may also start within six months. The UC president is fully onboard to Kelly and UC football. Kelly has said that is a high priority. UC must upgrade for him to stay. He was at Grand Valley State for 16 years. He likes being the top dog and recently on a Cincinnati TV station, he said building a program was "very cool". What's to build at Notre Dame. He has more talent in Cincinnati than most locations around the country and can stay home and recruit rather than recruit all over the country and miss his three kids and wife. He feels family life is Very important. I think he turns down the Irish and he continues at Cincinnati.
