Spiller is College Football’s MVP

C.J. Spiller

It seems that every journalist or former Heisman Trophy winner votes for the award in a different way. Some people vote for the best player in the country while other people vote for their favorite player or the best player in their favorite conference. There are even some voters that pick a player that leads the country in a certain statistic (Colt Brennan). Since everybody disagrees on what the Heisman Trophy actually means, we should focus on the Most Valuable Player in college football and the answer is pretty obvious.

Clemson running back C.J. Spiller is the new hot name in the Heisman race and he is having one of the most dominating seasons in college football. How dominating is Spiller this season? Spiller has eight plays over 60 yards, seven of which have gone for touchdowns. The Tigers (5-3, 3-2) are in the middle of the ACC Atlantic race and it is all thanks to Spiller. Quarterback Kyle Parker has thrown for 1,423 yards and 10 interceptions, but also has eight interceptions on the season. Without Spiller, Parker’s numbers would be drastically worse. Defenses try to load the box to stop Spiller, but the star running back/return specialist entered Saturday’s game against Coastal Carolina as the nation’s leader in all-purpose yards.

Keep in mind that Spiller has done this his whole career at Clemson as he has 19 touchdown plays of 50 or more, an NCAA record. Spiller split carries with James Davis his first three years at Clemson and it makes you wonder how good his stats would be if he never had to share the load for the Tigers. Florida fans probably think Tim Tebow is the MVP of college football, but John Brantley and Brandon Spikes would still have the Gators close to the top of the BCS. Alabama would miss Mark Ingram, but the Crimson Tide would still be a top-five team. Jimmy Clausen, Kellen Moore and Eric Berry are valuable to their teams, but Spiller is the better choice for MVP. Here is my bold prediction about Spiller: He will have a better NFL career than fellow running back/return specialist Reggie Bush
