Pittsburgh Fans Should Boycott Pirates Games

Enough Is Enough. Pittsburgh Pirates fans deserve better than the current management that is quitting on the city of Pittsburgh.  In this horrible economy, there is no point in spending $60 on tickets, beer and hot dogs if your team’s owner trades away every good player on your team.

The Pirates have already traded center fielder Nate McLouth, first baseman Adam Laroche, left fielder Nyjer Morgan and might trade third baseman Freddy Sanchez and pitcher Zach Duke before Friday’s trading deadline. It is very normal for teams to plan for the future by trading away current stars for prospects. The problem with the Pirates is they do this every year and even traded McLouth earlier this season when they there were close to the division lead. The Florida Marlins are the perfect example of a team that trades away veteran players for key prospects. The difference here is the Marlins have won two World Series since 1997 and management does everything in their power to win with what they can afford.

Remember in the 1990s when Barry Bonds, Bobby Bonilla, Jim Leyland and Benjamin Button Tim Wakefield were leading the Pirates to the NLCS three years in a row? Pirates fans shouldn’t expect their team to make the playoffs anytime soon until their management grows a backbone. I am convinced that if the late Hall of Fame right fielder Roberto Clemente was playing under this ownership, he would have been traded to some team for a pack of Big League Chew. I have always considered the Pittsburgh Steelers the easiest team to root for in the NFL because they win almost every year and change coaches as often as Travis Henry wears protection (hardly ever).  The Pirates have to be the most difficult team to root for and Pirates fans should boycott attending home games until their owners stop waiving the white flag.
