Michael Vick SHOULD NOT Be Suspended

After reading this article, I pray that the hypocrisy that is PETA has me on speed dial (poison control).  PETA and all you dog lovers will disagree with me on this, but you are mistaken if you do. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is scheduled to meet with former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and will decide if he will allow Vick to come back to the NFL.  I have heard some analysts say that Goodell might suspend Vick and the former Falcons quarterback will have to prove himself in the UFL.  The former Falcon can play in a league that still pays quarterbacks Alex Smth, David Carr, Sage Rosenfels, Kellen Clemens and Daunte Culpepper. Vick should not be suspended a game or even a down.

Do I hate dogs? No. I am actually a big animal guy and have had an animal in my house my whole life.  What Vick did was beyond disgusting and he deserved a harsh punishment. He served 21 months in prison and two more months under house confinement for running a dogfighting ring.  If Goodell suspends Vick for a game or even four, what does that accomplish? It would be one thing if the NFL had a history of being tough on all athletes, but that is not the case.

Former University of Tennessee star Leonard Little was suspended eight games and served 90 days in jail for involuntary manslaughter. He killed a human and yet he is still playing in the league.  Baltimore Ravens Pro Bowl linebacker Ray Lewis was charged with murder when a fight left two men dead outside a nightclub in Atlanta. Lewis spent 15 days in jail and a plea bargain produced a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of justice. He was the Super Bowl MVP the next season. Goodell wasn’t in charge when these incidents happened but he needs to compare these crimes involving humans to Vick's cause involving dogs.

Another former UT player, Donte Stallworth, served 24 days in prison for DUI manslaughter.  This did happen under Goodell’s watch and he is currently wondering how long he should suspend Stallworth. Stallworth should have served many more days in prison because 24 days is not enough when a bad decision cost somebody’s life. Goodell has two tough decisions to make in the next couple of months involving Stallworth and Vick.  I will disagree with Goodell if he suspends Vick for a game.  The NFL commissioner needs to realize that he is in charge of the best league in all of sports and if he suspends Vick for more games than Stallworth, he is making a decision that is on par with the stupid decisions that MLB commissioner Bud Selig and NHL commissioner Gary Bettman routinely make. You’re better than that Roger, now prove it.

  • Maybe they should all be held to the same standard. I think Vick should be suspended. But I also think the other players who committed crimes against people should not only serve more time in prison, but should be suspended as well. Just because some players get lighter punishment for more heinous crimes doesn't mean that Vick should be welcomed back into the NFL with open arms. Maybe football players could be treated the way any worker would be treated under the same circumstances. If I ran a dog fighting ring or was accused of murder or involuntary man slaughter I don't think my employers would jump at the opportunity to rehire me ... and rightly so.

  • I agree wholeheartedly, however in the situation with Stallworth 24 days was not a long time, and I understand he shouldn't have been drinking and driving but truthfully even if he was sober he still probably would have hit the guy. (I mean he ran across a 6 line highway and from what I understand Donte was in the fastlane...) Imagine trying to run across I-640 not just one side but BOTH! lol I hate to laugh because someone is dead but come on! Why do you ever have to run across that big of a highway?
